France trip, Nov 2007 - Ail Rose de Lautrec

The Pink garlic of Lautrec (Ail Rose de Lautrec) is a special variety of garlic which is grown in and around the medieval town of Lautrec, in the south of France.

All the pink garlics from the region comes with a Label Rouge (Red Label) 'certification' of origin . There is even a dedicated brotherhood, La confrĂ©rie de L'ail Rose de Lautrec, to protected and promoted these garlics! And of course, these garlics are also celebrated in an annual festival, la FĂȘte de l'Ail! The festival usually runs in early August and I can imagine a whole lot of garlic 'beauty pageants', cooking contests and lots of smelly breaths!!

We bought our first bunch of Ali Rose from the market in Paris. These garlics have a sweet and mild taste. It is very aromatic when cooked. It also keeps for much longer. Some says it can keep up to a year! Ours certainly didn't last that long! :)
